The Role of Families in Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism - Strategic Recommendations and Programming Options

The Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF) Ministers recently endorsed the launch of the GCTF’s Initiative to Address the Life Cycle of Radicalization to Violence (Life Cycle Initiative), tasking the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) Working Group with developing recommendations and programming options regarding the role of families in preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE). Families are recognized as essential actors in P/CVE efforts, influencing attitudes toward non-violence and playing a crucial role in identifying and intervening in the radicalization process. However, engaging families presents challenges, particularly when family dynamics are strained or non-existent. A workshop hosted by Hedayah under the auspices of the GCTF’s CVE Working Group aimed to identify lessons learned, good practices, and programming approaches empowering and supporting families in P/CVE roles. The resulting recommendations and programming options, while non-binding, provide valuable guidance for states in broadening and supporting national counterterrorism efforts while ensuring compliance with international and national laws.
