A Gender-Informed Approach to the Prevention of Violent Extremism in the Arab Region

This policy brief by UN ESCWA examines the integration of gender perspectives into PCVE strategies in the Arab region, with case studies from Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, and Tunisia. It highlights the disproportionate impact of violent extremism on women and the critical need for gender-sensitive approaches to address these challenges. The brief identifies barriers to women’s participation in PCVE efforts and outlines strategies to mitigate these obstacles, such as linking PCVE with the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda.

The report emphasizes the importance of addressing gender-based drivers of violent extremism and fostering women’s roles in peacebuilding and deradicalization. It also calls for the development of National Action Plans that are inclusive and responsive to gendered experiences of extremism. By offering concrete recommendations and insights, the brief serves as a practical guide for policymakers and practitioners seeking to mainstream gender in PCVE efforts.
