The Role of Young People in Preventing Violent Extremism in the Lake Chad Basin

Although gender is not the central focus of the study, gender-sensitive and gender-mainstreamed considerations underpin the research. The paper examines localized drivers of violent extremism in the Lake Chad Basin and highlights youth-led initiatives aimed at preventing violent extremism (PVE). The study draws primarily on the perspectives of young people - 95% of participants were aged 19-35 - and includes substantial participation of women (40%).

A key gender-related insight is the need for differentiated and context-specific approaches for men, women, boys, and girls. The study also underscores the importance of increasing support for women affected by radicalization and violent extremism, including through the empowerment of women leaders. The paper concludes with policy recommendations to strengthen youth- and community-based PVE initiatives in the region.
