Mapping the Germanosphere: A Pilot Study

This pilot study provides the first systematic mapping of misogynist online milieus within the German-speaking “manosphere.” Using a mixed-methods approach that combines expert interviews, digital ethnography, and network analysis, the study examines how misogynist ideologies, narratives, and actors are distributed across platforms and interconnected within the German online ecosystem.

The analysis identifies key manosphere sub-groups - including incels, pick-up artists, men’s rights activists, and redpill communities - and demonstrates how misogyny, male supremacism, and anti-feminist narratives intersect with broader anti-liberal, racist, and extremist ideologies. It highlights how online misogyny functions as a mechanism for disciplining women and reinforcing patriarchal gender norms, with documented spillover effects into offline harm and political violence.

The paper concludes by offering recommendations for policymakers, civil society, and platforms to better address misogynist online milieus and their role in radicalisation and democratic erosion.
